"What a difference a day makes," said Pastor Martha the next day. Despite heavy rain that came around noon time, there was much accomplishment in the morning. Trash, fallen branches, leaves, and twigs were almost completely removed, and the grass in about half of the visible yard was trimmed. While Raymond Eccleston kept an eye out for skulls and bones (no, he didn't find any), Moses Alcala removed branches and twigs in the northern part of the cemetery where it was eerily quiet, while taking photos of the volunteers. Sorry, Jonilee, but somehow Mo's camera missed you.
Many thanks to the OBC volunteers and the Journal Square Special Improvement District (SID), sponsor of this event with Chris Bernardo, Operations Manager, coordinating the work. After several years of neglect, the oldest cemetery in Jersey City now looks nice and dignified- our church ancestors deserve this much-needed facelift of their holy ground!
