The Old Bergen Church Sunday School has been an ongoing school for Christian education long before the Reformed and Presbyterian congregations joined in harmony. As early as the 1660s, the early Dutch settlers who founded the OBC were concerned with perpetuating their faith in the New World, thus the education of their youth was very much centered on religion.OBC continues its tradition of Christian education for the youth through the OBC Sunday School which is staffed by highly dedicated volunteer teachers. Classes are grouped according to age levels. School-ready 3 year olds through 2nd graders are taught about Jesus' life and Bible stories through various fun-filled activities. A child who "graduates" from 2nd-grade Sunday School instruction is presented to the congregation and receives a special Bible. The 3rd through 6th graders have their own group with more Bible-based instruction interwoven with artistic activities for creativity, and thoughtful discussions. The 7th and 8th graders go into the confirmands' class and have their intensive training in preparation for confirmation.
Every Sunday morning starting at 9:30 A.M. the children meet in the sanctuary for instruction in music (Children's Choir) taught by Chris Johnson, our talented Music Director. At 10:00 A.M. they move to their respective classrooms.
The children participate in church service once a month (Youth Sunday) and during special events. The choristers sing and the older youth take part in leading the service. The youth also perform during preludes, postludes, and offertory by playing instruments and singing.
OBC Sunday School encourages all children not only to grow spiritually and intellectually through the Christian faith, but also to discover and share their talents that God has given them.
